BUTTERFLIES IN BERLIN- Diary of a Soul Split in two”, written, directed and designed by Monica Manganelli (Italy-Germany)

Status: completed, in distribution . A LATTEPLUS BERLIN FILM PRODUCTION + ALEXANDRA CINEMATOGRAFICA SRL with the support of German Federal Ministry of culture and media, EMILIA ROMAGNA Film Commission and MIBACT-Italian Ministry of culture and cinema. Genre: dramatic animated film (30′ minutes).

Techniques: mix of 2D animation, motion graphics 3D, cut out computer animation, photos, collage, mattepainting-concept art.

SYNOPSIS:  The life of a man narrated through 4 passages that represent his physical and spiritual transformation, as 4 are the Metamorphosis of the butterfly (egg, caterpillar, pupa and adult). Film is set in Berlin during the Republic of Weimar (1930’s) and deals with the theme of the gender identity, Holocaust/Homocaust. Alex arrives in Berlin in 1933 in order to find his place in the world and to understand his sexual identity.  He meets Dr. Magnus Mirschfeld and he thinks that finally his soul can find comfort. Alex will be one of the first post-op transgender in History, unfortunately during the Nazi Regime’s rise. Hitler’s rise is coming and a current of discrimination and hatred towards the Jews and “deviant people” invaded Germany.
